I personally like the idea of forums better than just using the mailing list for some things. I'm not familiar with mailing lists and how they work, nor do I really like the flow and layout of them, to reply to things is awkward and most of the emails are taken up by reply junk that the person is replying to. It all seems very messy to me. Forums can better organize such things. And I agree in the long run, eventually, the mailing list alone isn't going to cut it as the project grows. I think it'd be acceptable to restrict heavily topics on such forums, maybe have a "Political" topic where people can throw their hate in, but honestly if you keep a strict topic of beneficial and educational information rather than allowing for jackassery it could work out.
