I'm not opposed to using another build system, but have you tried the
`build' scripts included in libsecondlife-cs and SLProxy? They're
meant to smooth over the mono build process. They don't automate
building dependencies, but that would be easy to add.

Hello everyone!
As a Mono on Linux user, I've found it cumbersome to build
linsecondlife-cs and it's related projects. For example, a project can
require the libsecondlife-cs project. As it stands prj2make can't
easily handle this. Also, custom build scripts are required to build
projects that require .NET 2.0 (gmcs).
So, as it stands, I feel we need some kind of unified, cross-platform
building system. I propose NAnt, as it's the only one I've heard of.
Regardless, we really need to limit complexity in the build procedure.
