I just wanted a way to IM people in SL while I was in class. :-)

I think everyone here has different reasons for fiddling with LibSL.  Mine for example are twofold:

1) The ability for better realtime comms with external devices (such as biofeedback devices).  Currently the project I'm following in that space is needing to create XML-RPC gateways to SL, and that does not scale well from several standpoints (including the fact that sending more often than once every 4 seconds without straining the grid would be nice).  In this case the libsl solution would be a proxy-style app that converts the BFB data into channel-set chat packets, that are sent 'directly' as part of the client stream.

I'm just now starting to look at the basics of the Proxy app, and seeing if it can just be used as-is from a plugin perspective or is better to strip it; The re-work that John mentioned earlier is having to re-think my approach anyway.

2) The ability to help SL developers port parts of their creations to other realms via a standardized save format.  In my case, the planned target is Uru Live and/or Uru Prime/UAM (which also happens to use Blender for its building tools ;-).

I also find it very telling, that a number of the Uru Age Builders are not using Blender directly, but instead use other 3D apps and import via a readable format.  Why not the SL primitive format for the initial build?  The interface still needs serious work to make it useable for serious Age Building, but its a good start (and once it's in Blender properly, you can mesh edit to your heart's content).  Various stuff that is required on both sides of this equation are slowly coming to frution, but probably won't become a reality for some time...

Subject: [libsecondlife-dev] thanks for the answers

HI!

Thanks for all the answers!  Just out of curiousity, what is the motivation behind libsecondlife?  all the effort to reverse engineer the second life protocol?  Is it to expand the usage of the protocol for other applications or is it interest-only?

Thanks so much for your help!

  Donna
