Great! I'm on vacation right now so I won't dig into this until december, but I appreciate your data. I also wanted to mention that it might be worth trying different sizes and thresholds in the libssh2 code to see what (if any) differences they make.
If anyone has a decent test setup, like perhaps just a ssh server not too close to me and is willing to offer me an account for further work on this, then please let me know. My own dev situation is a bit limited for this kind of task.
