It is not a GNU ld flag, it is a libtool flag, and it has been around
since 1999 in version 1.2f according to the libtool's NEWS file.  I have
been using it in several packages for a long time without problems.

How about adding it and see if we run into problems?  It would solve
Debian's symbol packaging concern.
