I question that we can rely on tar being installed, although I have not come across a system where it isn't. Please backport things to branch-1-5, it is apparently the branch that never dies, no matter how much we want it to.
As long as we continue to sit on the pot and not produce a replacement for branch-1-5, it will continue to be a thorn in our rear.
Note that I am as much to blame for "sitting on the pot" as anyone else, perhaps more so.
