I've looked at the snapshot. It uses Automake 1.9.6 and Autoconf 2.60. Since I'd rather use 1.10 and 2.61 for 1.5.24, I preferred a formal alpha. I've now adjusted the URL for the branch-1-5 snapshot to contain the string 1.5.23c in the name.
