With $host, things are not as black and white as you portray it.
For example, the different libc's on Linux x86 make for different
values of $host.

Hmm.  Such questions are best taken to the maintainer of
config.{guess,sub}, *after* the exact semantics are jotted down.
The most important issue with naming things is that they are named
*consistently*, not primarily *how* they are named.

Anyway, any review will have to wait a bit longer.
