whole_archive_flag_spec='-bgcbypass:`set fnord $convenience; shift; echo $#` 
$convenience'

?

Yep.  We should eventually clean this up.  Currently, a lot of code is
fragile to blanks and line breaks.  I guess we can go with the above.
