I agree that this would be good to look at improving. I am not sure if I could
complete this before the next release, but I will look into it.

This sounds fine to me. Could you write a patch for this, or specify the ENV
variable and parts of path conversion that you would like bypassed?

Testing on windows for libtool is quite slow, but hopefully I can improve that
soon.
