People who would want rTorrent to actually use up all the free space on a partition are in the minority, thus the default limit.

The mmap sync data corruption thing is actually fixed in the current code, so turning of low diskspace check is actually relatively safe. The only difference is that it uses a blocking version of msync, thus lowering performance when diskspace gets low and requires a rehash of the torrent if any of the syncs fail.
