Ha, just after sending my long email, this I saw:

and so I was able to download:
http://git.savannah.nongnu.org/cgit/libunwind.git/snapshot/libunwind-v1.2-stable.tar.gz
I've stubbed out our local patches and both qemumips and qemumips64
are buildable. I'll wiggle the patches back on later.
I guess I still don't understand why git tree/tarball and the
actual tarball from:
http://download.savannah.nongnu.org/releases/libunwind/
are out of sync. Thoughts?
