I guess that means that one of the newer macros could require 2.68+ > Autoconf 2.50 was released in Jul 2001. > Autoconf 2.68 was released in Sep 2010. This could be an issue. Personally, outside of major compilation issues, I'd prefer keeping a buffer of at least 3 years usability for any part of a compiler's toolchain. People are there to compile a library, not upgrade their toolchain... > I don't know what exactly is the minimal autoconf version number for > the libusbx project. > Maybe we should use 2.67 instead since it is the autoconf version > provided with Debian stable? Looking at [1], it seems that 2.66 and 2.67 are better avoided if possible. Maybe that's also the reason why autoupdate may try to enforce 2.68 as the minimal stable version. I'm having a hard time finding out the autoconf version where the likely candidate macros for a 2.68 prereq may have been introduced. At least LT_INIT and AC_CONFIG_HEADERS seems to be older than 2.68. My current preferred approach then would be to apply all these changes except the prereq, which we'd keep at 2.50, and see the kind of report we get. When in doubt, rely on users to answer your question. Of course, we may annoy the handful of developers who use real old versions of the tools, as the process may barf due to missing macros, but I think it's better than force everybody who still runs on 2.67 or earlier to upgrade. And no doubt if older autoconf users are annoyed, they'll provide some explicit answer as to how far back we should set the AC_PREREQ() to...
