I do not think it is really a trick only known by VMware. I do not use
VMware myself but used Microsoft's XP Mode (Virtual PC) supports
USB as well (under Windows 7).

Oracle/Sun VirtualBox should have similar feature as well. I use
VirtualBox under Mac OS X but not under Windows though.

All in all, I think libusb/libusbk are not the answer to your problem
and you may need to develop your own USB driver like VMware
or VirtualPC or VirtualBox.
