I do not think it is really a trick only known by VMware. I do not use VMware myself but used Microsoft's XP Mode (Virtual PC) supports USB as well (under Windows 7). http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/features/default.aspx Oracle/Sun VirtualBox should have similar feature as well. I use VirtualBox under Mac OS X but not under Windows though.
