Well, that was really a one in a billion issue (or more realistically a 
one in a million, as I doubt one actually gets nanosec level timer 
resolution during code execution, even on the fastest machine).

I have now pushed Peter's patch, amended to fix the other location where 
we were using a > instead of a >= (there's 2 of them). I don't think we 
really need the while(), but it doesn't hurt. This patch also reverts 
some of the extra instrumentation that was added, which should no longer 
be required.
