For instance, unlike libusb, libusbx does provide support for HID devices on Windows, which, if a developer chooses so, removes the need to use another 3rd party library. I'm also wondering if using the libusb-win32 filter driver, on top of the Mass Storage driver could also be a solution (with a note that libusb-win32 support is still not feature complete in libusbx, especially with regards to the filter driver).
