It might be still valuable to expose this functionality with a setting? Turn it on and it will do the ioctl calls? A normal web http get request is between 0.5kb and 1kb. You are saying that in this scenario it might introduce a significant performance decrease. However, if you do a mysql query and then receive tons of data, it might be actually the other way around...
