I'd call it -M bare-1.1, so that it can be used to override driver properties in 1.2+. So we'd have # default machine for this version qemu / qemu -M pc # an older version's pc qemu -M pc-1.1 # just a chassis, bring your own screwdriver qemu -M bare # previous generation chassis, beige qemu -M bare-1.1 That is because -M not only specifies the components that go into the machine, it also alters other devices you add to it.
