reading file contents into a hash

I am reading a directory full of .gifs into the keys of a hash, to
determine which files are unique.

When I output the keys to the hash to a new directory, with new
filenames, the files seem to have been truncated (the file headers still
look like .gif files, but each file is arbitrarily smaller).

Any help out there?
