Base Directory

Hello,
Here is my problem:

I want to follow links only from a domain and only under a specific
directory.
So if the input url is:
http://www.salon.com/media

How can I understand that "media" is a directory but not a file?
If I use URI module to get the base using this url, it outputs
http://www.salon.com/ !!!
