No, it can be in the http header (I've never seen 
it in both, and can't comment on that) - here is 
an example, go to:
http://www.hsus.greatergood.com/
and run the Search Across Stores searchbox.

The interim page (with the graphic of the running man) 
refreshes with a refresh in the http header.

btw, the backend search spyder does use LWP Parallel calls.
Has anyone made a public list of production softwares/services 
available that use LWP?
