To understand cookies:

There is a book published by Addison-Wesley specifically on cookies, which
may be more understandable, but the Netscape article above is fairly
straightforward.

You should also familiarize yourself with the HTTP spec RFC:
    http://www.ietf.org/rfc.html

Although that may be a bit out of your depth. You will benefit greatly from
a book relating to HTTP. There was an author who posted about his book on
LWP on this list--I don't recall the name or title, but a simple Amazon
search for "LWP" should find it. I can also recommend _Network Programming
with Perl_ by Lincoln Stein, although that is not HTTP/LWP specific.
