This is probably a libc issue.  What kind of system are you running?
(What kernel you have does not count).

My libc is glibc 2.2.4 (according to the redhat rpm I have installed), with gcc 2.96. As far as I can tell, I have the same stuff installed on two other boxes, and they both give the correct results.
