As you can see it gives one node which is null.

Hmm, it works as expected here.  What if you do:

puts nodes.first (or nodes.first.to_s or nodes.first.name)

Instead of nodes.debug (I never use that method since it doesn't work on
Windows).

Does the node have content?

If not, then it looks like you've found a bug.  So the usual questions.
  What version of libxml-ruby, libxml, what OS, etc?
