Let's imagine we have a huge amount of rather big messages. If a single character is changed in the source inside of them, make merge will kill 'em for good. Rather painful work to recover them afterward. Probably we can first make merge with obsoletes, then do all the translation, and only after that, when we are sure everything is OK, make a clean merge.
