I noticed it, too. I believe it has been introduced by Tuomas Jaakola's
"enhanced chatmode messageview" in september.
this is what he sent on 20.09.2002:
"I made finally this patch which includes following features:
* only one send and view (event) box per user is created
* only message events appears to the chatmode messageview
* dbl-clicking contact list creates right type of window or
raises it if it's already created
* in chatmode messageview messages are cleared by activating
the window"
His patch makes sense, but may be we should divide between the two different
desired actions when doubleclicking on a user in mainwindow:
1. open the already existing message view for the user, but _only_ if new
messages are waiting (only for this user)
2. otherwise create a new send window for this user
