I don't know how to fix the accented letters in MSN contacts nicknames, but for incoming messages, I just had to set the encoding for the relevant contact to UTF-8 in the message dialog (each contact file in your .licq dir show an encoding property that you can set). There is also an option to set the default encoding. Does it help?

Your suggestion with the encoding for each contact solved the normal message text, thanks.. :) silly of me to miss that one. The problem with the contacts list is that the nicknames have been added with the wrong encoding in the first place, so now I have to edit all the contacts with special characters manually and change them, but since it's just a matter of doing this once, I think I can live with it. :)
