You need to install gcc, make and autoconf if you want to compile any
programs.  Let me guess, you didn't think you needed development
tools?

If you use debian and have fast internet connection (chances are
small), you can install those packages with "apt-get install gcc make
autoconf".  Otherwise get packages where you get your packages (CD or
internet) and install them with your favourite package manager.
