New description:

I've been using the console mode quite a bit recently,
and there's one person whose name contains characters
that mess up the screen, and that I can't possibly type
(even by trying to copy/paste directly from the
username). Rather than going by UIN, it would be nice
if there was an option for anything other than [\w\s]
to be stripped, and duplicate names dealt with by
 appending [0], [1], [2], etc. So
 foo{complicated_character_string}bar would become foobar[0]

 Cheers,
 James
