I think David already answered your question about MySQL, but to interface with Derby you just need any database utility which speaks JDBC. There are several to choose from, both standalone varieties and Eclipse plugins such as this one: http://www.eclipseplugincentral.com/Web_Links-index-req-viewlink-cid-379.html I haven't tried that one myself though. I'm lead to believe that this app is popular: http://www.minq.se/products/dbvis/ I personally just use the clients in NetBeans or IntelliJ IDEA.
