How about 'archetype:create' instead of 'archetype:generate'?
mvn archetype:create -U \
-DremoteRepositories=http://scala-tools.org/repo-snapshots \
-DarchetypeGroupId=net.liftweb \
-DarchetypeArtifactId=lift-archetype-basic \
-DarchetypeVersion=1.1-SNAPSHOT \
-DgroupId=com.test -DartifactId=mytest
