Hi Robert, That's pretty much what I figured. I ran some tests on my side and came to that same conclusion.
What time-line are we looking at before a fix will be included in the Ubuntu package? I'm building VM templates, and I would rather not have to build in a workaround if I don't have to. Again, this is a great product and I'm really supportive of it. This is the only "hole" I've found so far, so keep up the good work. In the Windows architecture, DDNS is actually handled by the "DHCP Client" service, even on servers with statically assigned addresses. Because this service is tied to the networking stack, it's able to handle DDNS updates immediately upon IP address changes, or periodically for static systems. Likewise, not being tied to the networking stack as directly, especially because of the many platforms we support, can't handle those myriad reasons for rerunning DDNS updates as well as Windows can, only because the operating systems we're installed on don't always have a great way of telling Likewise "please run the DDNS updater". I hope that helps. -- Robert Auch Likewise Professional Services -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Oliver O'Boyle Sent: Wednesday, June 03, 2009 1:58 PM To: Sriram Nambakam; [email protected] Subject: Re: [Likewise-open-discuss] Dynamic DNS updates automation Hi Sriram, Thanks for the quick reply. Are these pending changes likely to be introduced soon? If so, what is the plan for updating the Jaunty likewise-open5 package with them? Due to some pending architectural changes, we have been running the lw-update-dns tool using cron and various scripts for now. Thanks, Sriram From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Oliver O'Boyle Sent: Wednesday, June 03, 2009 10:44 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Likewise-open-discuss] Dynamic DNS updates automation Hello list: First, thank you Likewise for building v5. It's exactly what I've been waiting for for years! Using Ubuntu 9.0.4 (Jaunty) I've successfully installed Open v5 and joined a domain. When this join operation completed and the server was rebooted, I expected that the client would automatically update our dynamic DNS servers (MS-DNS), but this didn't happen, or at least not within a couple of hours where I left the server alone. When I manually run the lw-update-dns tool, the update is sent and the client becomes registered (though the client used a server in a different AD site). Shouldn't the lw-update-dns tool run automatically when joining the domain, and then on a regular basis to keep the records fresh? For reference, my Ubuntu server has been assigned a static IP address and is not using DHCP or BOOTP. Thanks in advance for any help.
