Hello LS,
On this post I would like to pour my heart out in three areas related to Power
and the MOQ.
1.-Giants : [Horse and Diana. The M.A.I and Giants]
2.- Power of Information:[David Thomas. How long will it take (if ever) for the
MOQ to weave into the thread of Western Civilization]
3.-Power of Money : [David Buchanan. Power of Money]
1.-[Horse and Diana. The M.A.I and Giants]
Do we need Giants to fight other Giants? The two Giants we are referring to here
are the M.A.I and the Intellectual level of the MOQ. Which of these two will be
the winner over Society? Which one will 'sink its roots into the Social Level?
As David Thomas has put it:"...... .....Will the new root stock on the thousand
old trees of existing philosophy, that fragile and little TWIG (the MOQ) on a
small branch called pragmatism, survive in a sea of pollution (the Giants, such
as the M.A.I)??? Will that little TWIG stand long enough under the SUNLIGHT to be
able to gather strength and produce the seeds necessary to impregnate the
Earth???
Those are questions which don't have a one-liner answer; nevertheless couldn't
help it, but made a connection from one of my 'pillow-companions', and I will
like to share it with you all:
{............"Tell of ascient architects finishing their works on the tops of
columns as perfectly as on the lower and more visible parts! Nature has from the
first expanded the minute blossoms of the forest only toward the heavens, above
men's heads and unobserved by them. We see only the flowers that are under our
feet in the meadows. The pines have developed their delicate blossoms on the
highest TWIGS of the wood every summer for ages, as well over the heads of
Nature's red children as of the white ones; yet scarcely a farmer or hunter in
the land has ever seen them..........." From: 'Walden and Other writings,
Walking, p630, the Modern Library, N.Y. By Henry David Thoreau}.
Horse also pointed out:
......... "Actually I'm surprised there has be so little mention of the power
of
information in this months topic. .........." Please keep on reading
Carmen: [Let's put a little Play here together, Carmen plays Claudious, the LS
the Roman Senators]. Claudius, the Roman Emperor would say: "Words fail me",
while waving one hand high above his head, then would close his eyes and
concentrate and finally raise both hands over and still keeping his eyes closed,
would articulate the necessary words to explain himself in front on the Roman
Senate. Carmen, a member of the LS would say (playing Claudius's part) : "Words
fail me", and will once more used the words of other poets and writers. So,
picture Carmen for now as Claudius (I always loved the way the Romans used tree
branches on their heads; so when you think of my impersonation of Claudious,
please don't forget the branches over my head. Better yet, make them TWIGS), and
the LS as the members of the Roman Senate (Please don't forget a gorgeous robe to
match the parts). With that picture on your minds, Carmen waves the words of the
Poet again:
" Every one has heard the story which has gone the rounds of New England, of
a strong and beautiful bug which came out of the dry leaf of an old table of
apple-tree wood, which had stood in a farmer's kitchen for sixty years, first in
Connecticut, and afterward in Massachusetts,--from an egg deposited in the living
tree many years still, as appeared by counting the annual layers beyond it; which
was heard GNAWING out for several weeks, hatched perchance by the heat of an urn.
Who does not feel HIS FAITH IN A RESURRECTION and IMMORTALITY strengthened by
hearing this? Who knows what a beautiful and WINGED LIFE, whose egg has been
buried for ages under many concentric layers of woodenness in the dead dry life
of SOCIETY, deposited at first in the alburnum of the green and living tree,
which has been gradually converted into the semblance of its well-seasoned tomb,-
heard perchance GNAWING out now for years by the astonished family of man, as
they sat around the festive board,- MAY UNEXPECTEDLY COME FORTH FROM AMIDST
SOCIETY'S MOST TRIVIAL AND HANDSELLED FURNITURE, to enjoy its perfect summer life
at last!" (quoted from: The writings of Thoreau, Walden, last chapter.)
Carmen: Back to the present. One can almost hear the GNAWING from the LS. I heard
it! I was just sitting there, minding my own business, trying to be the best
possible Geoscientist, Mother, Wife, Friend, Mentor (within my family). Trying to
set an example. When the worse came, I had my books to keep me going. Getting
lost in that sea of information. I heard the GNAWING from you Guys, The LS. The
GNAWING came from my computer, and it came 'amidst society's most trivial and
handselled furniture', which was my computer/internet. How is that for a vision?
After this comes the big question, when? how?. Part of the answer to that takes
me to the second area.
2.-[David Thomas. How long will it take (if ever) for the MOQ to weave into the
thread of Western Civilization] .
I will be more optimistic than David in this area, the reason being the speed on
which information travels has increased over the years. A while ago, I think it
was in one of my computer courses. We were studying the Microprocessor. I came
across an article from BYTE magazine called " The Birth of the Microprocessor.,
An invention of major social and technological impact reaches its twentieth
birthday. By Federico Faggin". I won't quote anything from the article, but the
idea I wish to express is that the speed to which information is traveling these
days is higher than any time in history. Not only that is traveling fast, but it
is traveling in a way that is very hard to CONTROL. One might argue that a power
failure or suppose we suddenly run out of electricity, and so on. But that will
be the extreme. On this scenario let the 'Best System' take over. We make our
beds and we have to sleep on them. On the battle between the GIANTS and the MOQ,
as the saying goes, let the best man win. It has to flow nice and easy. There is
enough argument here to go on for months. (I will write more on these, later).
"Quality Manifestos", I like the sound of that. We need to write the "MOQ Quality
Manifestos" .
3.-Power of Money : [David Buchanan. Power of Money]
David Buchanan posted a very good post about the 'Power of Money', I seem to
recall. Here area some exerts:
David wrote: "Money is key to understanding political power structures. Who
was it
that said "Economics is politics in disguise"? Money represents stored
energy. Money is concentrated work. My paycheck represents all the
energy I spent do work for my employer. I trade it for goods and
services, which were also produced by work. How money is spent and
earned are both moral issues. Do you buy sweat shop sneakers and support
near-slave labor? Do you eat bananas even though they were produced on a
plantation owned by a company that helped depose the host country's
democratically elected government in a brutal coup? Can you drive a Ford
knowing they made profits from slave labor in Nazi Germany? Can you work
in a bomb factory? Could you work in a concentration camp if the pay
were really good?
When you give your money, you give your power. Who gets your money? Who
gets your power?
David B. "

Carmen: I have run out of time, once more. I would love to write more. Que
