They will only fail if staging has been updated by someone else in the mean time. You can minimize the affected time window by doing "git fetch" before the checkout, but everything between the last fetch and the push is fair game for someone else stepping on staging, thus requiring a repeat of the whole process starting with git fetch.
Don't see much that can be done about that.
