The whitespace errors are from upstream (I have not absolutely checked that
the small modification on top of it does not add more and can do so before
checking in, but it is certainly not to the tune of 34 lines). There is no
point in diverging from upstream more than necessary, so I won't fix any
whitespace error I have not added myself.
