I was going to wait for 2.17.x, because this is the first complaint since the fix from issue 654, and I didn't want to risk a regression disrupting 2.16. Also, I misinterpreted comment 2 as saying to wait.
I looked some more for possible trouble, and finding none, I think we can patch now.
