I made the example too tiny, thus too easy to fix. The original example
from
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-lilypond/2012-07/msg00085.html
was still missing its first span bar with the patch above. This first span
bar went missing with the fix for issue 1846. Here is an expanded new
patch, with that first bar restored as well.
