I am dead tired by now. I lean towards restoring the old behavior in
2.16.1 (namely shift for even line-count without line-positions, do nothing
otherwise), and use 0 consistently in 2.17. If we get no complaints for
2.17 behavior for a reasonably long time, we might make that standard
behavior. But I would want to avoid too much bouncing back and forth in
the stable releases, in case a better rationale for the original change
turns up in user feedback.
That is not as much solving things as it is resolving them.
Somehow a quote from Catch-22 seems appropriate:
