Looks like an incomplete fix (addressing the original report but not being
entirely consistently) has been pushed and is contained in 2.17.0. A
followup fix has been posted, but the review has been clobbered by
discussions about Grenouille and the need to do _separate_ work. It also
appears that the latest patch trying to address additional inconsistencies
causes problems described in comment #25, so it is indeed "Needs_work",
though the current state is not likely a regression any more due to the
first, already pushed change. As a further complication, a complementing
change has already been pushed as issue 2768.
