all the independent changes in issue 2533 deal with the effect of the
line_count change. so do issue 2300, which started as issue 2109, and
issue 2515, this being a collection of otherwise unrelated fixes just like
2533.
some of those changes may still trigger regressions in similarly exotic
circumstances.
I'm really happy to work on them if discovered, and will try to keep calm
if anybody suggests reversion :)

I consider the line_count change (a tiny part of d10ec4f5) obviously
correct.
