The most recent patchset for 6498077 has a sketch of that - it still needs work, but I don't plan on pushing that patch until I work out the regtest bug (see issue 2801 for more info). Feel free to lift it, modify it and include it in your patch - if you get it in before I do I'll use whatever version you come up with.
