I have decided to split this patch/issue into two separate ones, one for
\hide/\omit, and one for \single. It would seem that the \hide/\omit
change has reached the state where it is reasonably uncontested, but it
turns out that I have a significant improvement for that as well. The
\single stuff, however, is still a bit under discussion, and it will
obviously require a followup issue dealing with integrating it into our
documentation.
