Miguel has reported LilyPond crashes with about 1200 bars:

I can reproduce this with the code
\repeat unfold 651 { c'1 c \break }
with the error message:
Fitting music on 50 or 51 pages...terminate called after throwing an
instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
what(): St9bad_alloc
