Actually, rereading the patch, the changes in documentation are so subtle
that they don't actually give either users or reviewers much of a chance to
realize what this is actually about and that there is a new choice. I'm
putting in some more work here, and I might try getting the convert-ly
component from issue 3229 factored out and documented as an _optional_
conversion tool.
