Actually, ~ are somewhat weird in that they are starting spanners without
an ending spanner. I actually realized just now that I always write a4~ a
rather than a4 ~ a.
It may seem somewhat ridiculous, but maybe we should really omit that first
space in the documentation consistently. While this is not a substitute
for a full explanation somewhere, it might help a bit with keeping people
off the wrong track.
