I have the suspicion that the problem that is triggered here is related to
the problem that the "fix" for issue 542 is trying to sweep under the rug:
it occurs in a similar context (just a "pure" one). Maybe analyzing and
fixing issue 542 properly (rather than creating a shortcircuit path around
the code where the symptoms cause a crash) would also help with this
problem.
