It's worth mentioning that the entire premise of this section ("So to
ensure they do not overlap in the horizontal direction we must override
this value of extra-spacing-width to '(0 . 0) so the true width shines
through.") appears to be false post 2.17.0. The section needs a complete
re-write to take account of the new spacing calculations.
