Keith -- try transposing it by a quarter-tone. It'll break. ;-)

... where I described a similar cheat, but with the up/down arrows giving
pitches much closer to +/- 1/4 than given in the snippet.
Bottom line of it is the cheat can work within certain constraints but it
doesn't give an adequate overall solution.
