The quick fix was just one line, but I hadn't put that line in quite the
right place. The correction behaves the same way, so I decided to re-post
at http://codereview.appspot.com/21050043/ re-test with `make check` and
push to staging as commit 025f0236ebab947e6fe2047f20b7f74f4cec3fc4
