Concerning comment 1: I believe this is because of issue 3304 (i.e. the
bug in spacing mechanism that manifests itself in issue 3304 is responsible
for the huge differencies here, when the line is stretched a lot).
It would be good to look carefully at the spacing mechanism, but that has
to wait until after 2.18, i think. It'd be too much work now.
